overview

In one quick year, Robert Pattinson went from being an actor in smaller movie roles to a vampire idol of millions. Prior to 2008, Robert was best known as Harry Potter’s ill-fated friend who competes with him in the TriWizard Tournament, in 2005’s “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.” However, when he was cast as Edward Cullen, the romantic vampire hero in Stephenie Meyer’s “Twilight” series in 2007, he became an overnight sensation.

Robert Thomas-Pattinson was born on May 13, 1986 in London, England, in the United Kingdom and was raised by his parents, Clare and Robert Pattinson, in Barnes. As a teen, he learned classic drama by joining the prestigious Barnes Theatre Club. He was sought out by a casting agent, and was encouraged to pursue a career in acting. In 2004, he debuted in the epic fantasy “Ring of the Nibelungs,” which aired in the United States as “Dark Kingdom: The Dragon King” in 2006.

Soon after, Robert won the role of Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” for director Mike Newell. Robert was singled out in the press for his performance, and was named a, “future Jude Law.”

Following Harry Potter, Robert appeared as a shell-shocked World War II airman in “The Haunted Airman” for BBC Four, and a nerdy student in the drama, “The Bad Mother’s Handbook” for ITV. Later in 2007, he re-appeared in a flashback cameo as Diggory in “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.” In 2008, Robert appeared as a depressed man in the feature “How To Be,” which earned him critical acclaim. He also portrayed surrealist Salvador Dali in “Little Ashes,” which opens in March 2009.

Those roles, however, were overshadowed by Robert’s portrayal of Edward Cullen in “Twilight,” which, with a huge following already established by the novels, opened to huge box office numbers. Tons of Internet sites sprung up overnight and immediately, he became a household name.
